What is the difference between a European dishwasher and an American dishwasher?

While American’s and European’s both call it a dishwasher about the only thing they have in common is that they will both clean your dishes- and that’s where the similarities end!

American dishwashers use hot water from the tap to clear off the dishes and a mechanical garbage disposal to grind up your leftover food. European dishwashers however have a water heater built right in- so before hitting your dishes, the water is over 150 degrees- deep cleaning and sanitizing all your dishes and silverware. Instead of a machine that chops up the food, European models use physics to get the same job done- which eliminates many of the draining issues people sometimes experience. This is part of what leads to European dishwasher being known as the worlds quietest.

If you’re thinking of hiding your dishwasher behind a panel, European is the way to go. They are designed to sit 24″ deep including the wooden panel, while American models are usually 24″ deep even before adding the door! One inch might not seem like such a big deal, but it’s the difference between a dishwasher that you’ll see sticking out and a dishwasher that really disappears into the rest of the cabinetry!
