Taking a Look at Different Refrigerator Door Types

If you are looking to buy a new refrigerator, it may be easy to become overwhelmed with the number of options available, since there's lots of variety when it comes to fridge features. One characteristic of refrigerators that varies from one fridge to the next is the refrigerator door. Here's a look at the types of refrigerator doors available, so you can choose what's right for you.

The Top Freezer Fridge

The top freezer fridge is one of the most traditional refrigerator layouts. With the top freezer fridge, you have a freezer door on top that swings outward, and a refrigerator door on the bottom that swings outward. The freezer is usually smaller in size and capacity than the refrigerator.

The Bottom Freezer Fridge

The bottom freezer fridge has the freezer on the bottom, below the refrigerator unit. Usually, with a bottom freezer fridge, the freezer pulls out like a drawer, with a handle at the top for guidance and control.

The Side-by-Side Fridge

The Side-by-Side Fridge is an excellent choice for anyone who is looking for a refrigerator and freezer that are the same size and capacity. In a side-by-side fridge, the fridge and the freezer are next to each other, split between the appliance. A door on one side swings outward to reveal the fridge, and a door on the other side swings outward to reveal a freezer.

The French Door Fridge

The French Door Fridge has two French doors with handles that pull outward in opposite directions for the refrigerator unit, which is usually on top of a freezer. In the French Door fridge, the freezer usually pulls out like a drawer and is smaller in capacity than the refrigerator.

When choosing a refrigerator, consider the type of doors you want. To do so, think about the space that you're putting the fridge into, as well as how you'll use it. This will ensure that the largest part of the appliance (the fridge vs. the freezer) is the part you need the most space in and that the doors comfortably open.
