Kitchen Quality

It is easy to look at our homes and think of the What If possibilities, especially when it comes to our kitchens. Having more space for storage, nicer countertops, higher quality appliances and an overall better entertaining area would appeal to most of us. With the endless stream of renovation shows, it only fuels the desire that your new kitchen may actually be within reach. Many people renovate their kitchen to make entertaining easier and more enjoyable, and even making the day-to-day meals for your family a simpler task. Before starting any project, especially your kitchen, you should have a figure for what you think the cost could be and how much you are willing to spend. It is especially important to factor in a contingency as you may come across unexpected expenses.

First you must view your kitchen renovation as an investment, whether you plan on selling your home soon or living there for many more years. It will add both value to your home and your life when done correctly. It isn’t always best to select the cheapest options for everything, as you will soon notice why the cost was so low. Similarly picking the most expensive choice will not only quickly demolish your budget but you may find products later that deliver the same quality and design at a lower cost as we are often swayed by name recognition.

While the cabinetry, flooring, backsplash and countertops are often glorified on the remodeling and renovation shows, the appliances usually take a backseat. Every part of your kitchen is important; cheap cabinetry might break and fall apart, countertops can get chipped or stained if not maintained and the flooring must not only support all of the new updates, but also receives wear from children, pets and guests. This is especially important when it comes to your appliances, as they are machines with moving parts, some of which are constantly running. By considering the operating and usage expenses, there is more to think about than the appliances’ purchase price. Before considering taxes and installation; kitchen packages can range as low as $2,000 or as high as $20,000, or more, depending on the manufacturer and if you add additional appliances like an ice-maker or wine fridge. This also means the quality and reliable service, if your appliance ever needs to be repaired, will also vary depending on the brands you select.

The size of your kitchen is extremely important; a larger space usually means a higher cost, as the average kitchen renovation is $150 per square foot, but can easily reach $250 per square foot if you want high-end finishes and are moving any electrical or plumbing. For a standard sized kitchen of 100-200 square feet, that could range from $15,000-$30,000 for an average remodel; while upscale renovations can easily exceed $50,000 when all is said and done. It is always better to prepare for the worst and hope for the best and with any luck end up under budget.

As most people aren’t often involved in kitchen renovations on a regular basis you may not be familiar with all of the brands available to you and may be relying on old information. While your old range or refrigerator might have performed well in your previous kitchen, the manufacturing and reliability may have changed since then. Other brands that you haven’t owned or aren’t familiar with may provide better quality and dependability. A brand that provides superior support and customer service is an important factor when purchasing. You plan on having your appliances in your home for many years and don’t want to be replacing them too soon or spending more on repair costs than you have to.

By investing in your kitchen appliances at the time of your remodel, they will cost you less over the lifespan of your kitchen. For example by purchasing a higher quality refrigerator it will keep your food fresher, some foods twice as long, and they have a greater lifespan. Better filtration and temperature control also prevents the ice and other food in your fridge or freezer from absorbing any odors and affecting the taste. If you factor that the average household wastes almost $1,500 a year due to spoilage it could be almost $30,000, or more, in saved food cost over the lifespan of the refrigerator. You may save initially on cheaper units, however a more efficient refrigerator has a lifespan of 20 years or more while many average units are 14-10 years and inexpensive units often last less then 10 years, meaning you could be buying more fridges in less time.

When it comes to dishwashers a more reliable machine may cost a little more when purchasing but quickly saves over time as it consumes less energy, uses less water and will not only clean your dishes better but will have less wear from washing. Another factor is building quality and material, stainless interiors not only last longer but also are more sanitary compared to plastic tubs. If you are constantly rewashing dishes after already having them in your dishwasher, you are spending more on water usage and more importantly, your time. Dishwashers and other appliances with an Energy Star rating will cost less to operate; many appliances are used on a daily basis and power usage could significantly impact your electric bill.

Even ovens, cooktops, ranges and ventilation may be worth the extra expense, especially if you plan on using them. A better build quality means a longer lifespan and more efficient performance. Paying a little more for these appliances can provide more consistent results when cooking and features that save you time in the kitchen. Proper ventilation will not only be quieter during use but is more successful in removing things that could damage your cabinetry like heat, odor, grease and smoke.
